Gaffer Brings Speculation To A Holt

Over the last couple of days, various media have reported that the Pilgrims are lining-up a bid for Rochdale's Grant Holt. The former Sheffield Wednesday forward, 24, has bagged 15 goals for the Dale this season and has looked highly impressive. His record now stands at 34 goals in 74 appearances and his consistently good form has attracted the attention of many clubs, who believe thay could easily tempt Holt away from the League Two side. Crewe Alexandra, Hull and Swansea City have all been linked too.

Dario Gradi is after someone to resolve his Crewe side's lack of goals this season, as where League One Swansea could possibly be looking for a long-term replacement for striking sensation Lee Trundle, arguably the most sought-after player in the entire football league. Hull City's Peter Taylor was the first to dismiss the link with Holt - the Tigers are set to boost their squad by making striker Billy Paynter's stay permenant. Paynter, along with Sam Collins were prime targets for Tony Pulis when he first came to Home Park, but both opted for the Humberside move over signing for Argyle.

The Pilgrims are said to be hot on the heels of Holt, probably derived from Pulis' constant admission to the local media that he is not content with the Plymouth squad at present. However, he is the first to play down transfer talk when speculation arises and his policy remained unchanged when commenting on Holt. "We have watched him on two or three occasions this year", Pulis admitted, "but I'm not sure that he would be the one we would want". Having confirmed the initial interest, the Argyle manager hinted that he still might be interested should Rochdale lower their asking price. "He would cost anything from £500,000 to £700,000", Pulis said, "That's too much", suggesting that perhaps that club finances could be behind his lack of new faces. More evidence to suggest this id the Cheif Executive's recent plea for fans to turn out in their masses for home matches as diminshed crowd sizes, down on last year's average, will not have been budgeted for.

Sky Sports, however, have reported that a player-plus-cash deal may be on the cards with unsettled striker Scott Taylor heading to Spotland. Ever since the summer, Taylor has reportedly been seeking a move back North and now rarely figures in the first-team with Nick Chadwick favoured up front. With Chadwick amongst the goals once more, and Mickey Evans and Matt Derbyshire also on the books, the addition of another striker could possibly spell the end for Taylor. What Argyle must bear in mind, is the reputation and scoring-record that Scott brought with him to Home Park and although he has yet to replicate it at a higher level, Holt's is an unproven at this level and his goal-ratio dosen't even compare to Taylor's 60 in under 3 years.

Also, Norwich City have announced that they will be recalling Jason Jarrett from his loan spell at Plymouth after the Leeds United match, which will be televised live from Home Park.
