Southampton have signed full-back Jack Stephens from League One rivals Plymouth Argyle for ?150,000.The 17-year-old has agreed a three-year deal, but can not play for the Saints first team this season because he has joined outside the transfer window.

Southampton boss Nigel Adkins told the club website: "He's young, talented and has been on our radar for a while."

Meanwhile, 19-year-old defender Ben Reeves has signed a new two-year contract at St Mary's.

Stephens made his Argyle debut in September and has made five further appearances for the Pilgrims.

"This is a great signing for the academy," said Saints under-18s coach Jason Dodd. "He actually played against us in the FA Youth Cup earlier this season so we know all about him.

"It is great that the club is delivering its promise of recruiting and developing the best young talent in the country.

"Jack has performed really well for a first year and this signing gives us all a fantastic opportunity to progress to where we want to go."
