Plymouth Argyle are the latest club to suffer a transfer embargo. The Times can reveal that the Football League has imposed the punishment because of unpaid debts, but the club are confident that it will be lifted before the January transfer window opens so they can sign new players next month.

"There is a temporary one [embargo] in place that will be cleared by the end of December so we'll be in the transfer market in January," Keith Todd, the Argyle executive director, said. "It will all be cleared. It is in relation to an historic matter that will be cleared this month. It's not a problem."

Argyle currently lie 23rd in the Championship and removed manager Paul Sturrock last week, with head coach Paul Mariner taking charge of the team.

"The embargo did not affect deals done in the last transfer window and won't affect anything in the next window," a club spokesman told BBC Sport.

"The embargo is a historic matter and it will be sorted."
