Plymouth gained another vital three points with a 1-0 win at Blackpool to go top of the Second Division and keep up their charge for automatic promotion.

The hard-working Pilgrims inflicted an eighth home defeat of the season on Blackpool, who would have hoped for a better performance to celebrate reaching the LD Vans Trophy Final for the second time in three years.

A travelling army of almost 2,000 Argyle fans had little to cheer in the first half when both sides struggled to carve out chances.

But, after the break, they had reason to thank young stand in keeper Luke McCormick.

The opening five minutes of the half saw the youngster make three fine saves. The first came from a free-kick by Rick Wellens on the edge of the area, which beat the wall but was parried by McCormick for Keith Southern to shoot over the bar.

Barely two minutes later Mike Sheron, who scored in his last two games, again came close to breaking the deadlock with a run and excellent shot from the edge of the area which drew an equally good save from McCormick.

Finally, five minutes into the half, McCormick made the best of his saves from another free-kick, this time hit with great power by big centre half Steve Elliott.

The breakthrough for the visitors came nine minutes into the second half when substitute Ian Stonebridge got free in the edge of the area and drove an excellent shot past Phil Barnes and in at the far post.

Plymouth retained the ball well and had the better of the play until Blackpool pushed on a third striker, teenage substitute Matthew Blinkhorn, and it was Blinkhorn who came closest to giving the home side a share of the points.

A Sheron cross picked out the striker at the far post and his header was goal-bound until McCormick somehow managed to turn the ball around the post for a corner, this eventually fell to Wellens, who again drew a good save from man-of-the-match McCormick.

Plymouth boss Paul Sturrock said after the game: "It was a disappointing performance but I am delighted with the result. We did little in the first half but looked better in the second.

"We looked nervous at times but hopefully that result will be a springboard for the rest of the season.

"Being top now had just added more pressure but we will be happy to be in the top two at the end of the season." Blackpool boss Steve McMahon said: "It was a very disappointing result. Three or four of our players looked lethargic.

"We did have chances but Plymouth are a hard working side - maybe we should adopt some of their tactics and be a bit more streetwise."
