Neither Blackpool nor Plymouth did their fading play-off hopes any good with a hard working but deadlocked encounter in front of Bloomfield Road's biggest crowd in the league this season.

The home side almost took the lead after just eight minutes when winger Ben Thornley rattled the bar with a long-range effort.

But the visitors, watched by more than a thousand supporters who had made the long journey from the south coast, had the better of the opening exchanges and got the goal their efforts deserved just before the half-hour mark.

It took a fine finish from Marino Keith, who hit a half volley from outside the area past Phil Barnes and into the net.

An equaliser came just over ten minutes later, with the Pilgrims rearguard looking for offside, Scott Taylor's shot slipped through the arms of Romain Larrieu and trickled over the line.

Just before the break Plymouth had the ball in the net for a second time, though, on this occasion, the goal was disallowed for what appeared to be a push on Barnes.

After the break both sides were restricted to long-range efforts, though the home team almost nicked it late on when captain Simon Grayson found an unmarked Taylor who saw his header hit the bar.

After the game Blackpool manager Steve McMahon said: "It was a fair result, both sides worked hard but there was not much quality on show and it was a fairly close encounter.

"The pitch did not help, it's going thin on top a bit like myself." Plymouth boss Paul Sturrock, whose side were watched by a number of fans from his old club, Dundee United, said: "We were a wee bit disappointed as we had a chance or two in the first half and if we had taken those it might have been a different game.

"Our fans were fantastic they sang all day and I hope they have a really good weekend."
