Grimsby player-manager Paul Groves hailed the club's fans that helped his team gain a goalless draw against Second Division leaders Plymouth Argyle at Blundell Park.

Groves recalled himself for the first time since the 8-1 thrashing at Hartlepool earlier in the season and led by example in the centre of midfield.

Grimsby could have won all three points and Plymouth manager Paul Sturrock admitted he was come away "with a result of sorts." Sturrock expected Grimsby to come at his side after the disappointment of their 4-1 defeat at Wycombe last week and he added: "We got in a rut early on. Grimsby had a point to prove after last week and they set the tone for the game early on.

"Their manager is probably disappointed not to have won. Grimsby are in a false position but are finding that when you come down a division it takes some time to adjust." In a game of comparatively few chances Grimsby went closest in the second half with a header from midfielder Phil Jevons that came back off the post.

Rookie striker Darren Mansaram had a fine match for Grimsby but tired and was taken off near the end.

Plymouth with 59 goals the league's top scorers seldom threatened and Grimsby keeper Aidan Davison did not have a shot to save throughout the match.

His opposite number, Luke McCormick, was not unduly extended either but he was certainly the busier keeper.

The draw means that Grimsby have now gone seven games without a win while Plymouth, who were within sight of a club record of nine successive wins, failed to do so. But, after seven successive victories and clean sheets in their last five games, they are still firm contenders for the Second Division championship.
