Plymouth Argyle went three points clear at the top of the Second Division after a Marino Keith goal secured their fourth successive victory.

Keith struck in the 43rd minute to secure the points for the Pilgrims against a Blackpool side that came to Home Park with no thought except to defend.

They sacrificed their leading scorer Scott Taylor and most creative midfielder Martin Bullock, played John Murphy alone up front, and managed a solitary shot on target during the 90 minutes.

Their task was made harder when midfielder Jonathan Douglas was sent off for a second bookable offence in the 55th minute, but, despite some anxious moments at the back, they managed to keep the free-scoring Pilgrims down to a single goal.

Argyle had netted 14 goals in their previous three league games, including five at Port Vale the previous week and six in their last home game against Tranmere, so perhaps Blackpool boss Steve McMahon's caution was understandable.

However, his pre-match boast that his side are as good as the division's leaders was made to look hollow by their negative tactics that smelt only of damage-limitation.

Argyle looked tired after their recent travels but still managed to create a host of chances and hit the woodwork twice in the second half, with Keith going close to doubling his tally when he thumped a drive against the foot of goalkeeper Phil Barnes' post.

Then, in the dying minutes, Blackpool defender Steve David headed a cross from Argyle's Mickey Evans against his own crossbar. It was by far the closest the Seasiders came to scoring.
