Brave Wycombe came within ten minutes of depriving Second Division leaders Plymouth of another win towards their promotion cause with a gutsy defensive display in a 2-1 defeat.

It took a cheeky back-heel from man-of-the-match Mickey Evans to deny the Chairboys a share of the spoils after they had taken a shock lead through striker Nathan Tyson.

The former Reading man put the Pilgrims on the back foot in the fifth minute, when he outpaced Paul Connolly to Darren Currie's quick free-kick and lifted the ball over goalkeeper Luke McCormick.

Wycombe goalkeeper Steve Williams performed heroics to keep out a succession of Argyle attacks as the leaders peppered the away goal through Evans, Marino Keith and David Friio.

When he was finally beaten, by Keith's astute flick, the outside of the post came to his rescue.

However, Argyle's persistence paid dividends approaching half-time when Tony Capaldi's whipped-in corner was bundled home six minutes before the interval by Graham Coughlan.

Argyle's momentum continued in the second half, but Wycombe held firm. Williams again performed heroics, and Roger Johnson twice cleared off the goalline, from Friio and Paul Wotton.

With ten minutes to go, Argyle substitute Nathan Lowndes chased a lost cause and returned the ball into the six-yard box, where Evans converted a vital strike with his back to the goal.

The Chairboys, who finished the game with substitute Steve Brown in goal for the injured Williams, finished with defender Johnson playing up front, but they could not find another goal.

Argyle, who now lead second-placed Queens Park Rangers by six points, visit third-placed Bristol City on Tuesday, knowing that victory will see them all but mathematically clinch promotion.
